Dimensions bibliometrics data

Dimensions is a linked research information dataset and tool, used to discover and access grants, publications, citations, clinical trials, patents and policy documents.

The bibliometrics indicators used in this report were derived using data obtained from Digital Science's Dimensions platform. Access was granted to subscription-only data sources under license agreement.

Definitions used for all figures:

Publication data include journal articles, preprints, books, book chapters, and conference proceedings. The data obtained from Dimensions is either used on its own or in combination with other data sources (refer to Figures 14 which included StatsNZ RAD data and 15 which includes OECD MSTI data).
A field of research is assigned to every publication (with New Zealand affiliated authors) using the Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification.

Definitions used in figures 16 and 17:

The data in figures 16 and 17 are for publications produced in 2010 and 2020 in the fields of research presented.

Definitions used in figure 28:

Single author publications: Publications in which only one author has been listed as the publishing author.
Non-single author publications: Publications where the authors listed as publishing authors is not one.

Definitions used in figure 29:

Single author publications: Publications in which only one author has been listed as the publishing author.
Non-single author publications: Publications where the authors listed as publishing authors is not one.

Definitions used in figure 30:

External co-authorship: Publications with more than one author and more than one institutional affiliation.
No co-authorship: Publications with only one author or only one institutional affiliation (discounting internal collaboration)
Single author publications: Publications in which only one author has been listed as the publishing author.
The data in figure 30 is for publications produced in 2019 in the fields of research presented.

Definitions used in figure 31:

International co-authorship: Publications with more than one author, more than one institutional affiliations, and more than one country affiliations (including New Zealand).

Definitions used in figure 32:

International co-authorship: Publications with more than one author, more than one institutional affiliations, and more than one country affiliations (including New Zealand).
The data in figure 32 is for publications produced in 2019 in the fields of research presented.

Definitions used in figure 33:

International co-authorship: Publications with more than one author, more than one institutional affiliations, and more than one country affiliations (including New Zealand).
With no international co-authorship: Publications with at least one author, at least one institutional affiliation, and only one country affiliation.
The data in figure 33 is for publications produced in 2019 in the fields of research presented.

Definitions used in figure 39:

The proportion of New Zealand-based publications in the top 1% of world research, by field is based off the Field Citation Ratio (FCR). The FCR is a citation-based measure of scientific influence of one or more articles. It is calculated by dividing the number of citations a paper has received by the average number received by documents published in the same year and in the same Fields of Research (FoR) category.
The data in figure 39 is for publications produced in 2019 in the fields of research presented.

Definitions used in figure 40:

The data in figure 40 is for publications produced in 2010, 2019 (FCR) and 2020 (RCA) in the fields of research presented.

Data interval

Annual. Figures 14, 15, and 39 take 2018 as the latest year. Figure 40 takes 2018 as the latest year for FCR data and 2019 for RCA data. All other figures involving Dimensions data take 2019 as the latest year.
