The OECD main science and technology indicators (MSTI) database compiles an annual series of global, comparable statistics on science, research and innovation.
Data taken from OECD for all countries. Recalculated or approximated NZ values were taken from the 2020 Stats NZ R&D survey.
Public funding is the total amount of Government budget appropriations for R&D.
Public funding data for all countries (and for New Zealand from 2010 to 2015) is taken from OECD R&D. Data from 2016-2020 is from New Zealand Treasury appropriations in which public funding amounts were determined. The data from 2016-2020 is then converted into OECD values (for NZ in dollar PPP). This data is then GDP for all countries is taken from the OECD MSTI and then converted into percentages.
Public funding data is weighted by GDP to enable comparisons with other countries.
Data for New Zealand Business expenditure on research and development (BERD) comes from the StatsNZ Research and Development (RAD) survey; data for other countries are from OECD MSTI. Recalculated or approximated NZ values were taken from the 2020 Stats R&D survey data
New Zealand's R&D expenditure was weighted by GDP using OECD data to enable comparisons with other countries.
Data for New Zealand Government expenditure on research and development (GOVERD) comes from the StatsNZ Research and Development (RAD) survey; data for other countries are from OECD MSTI. Recalculated or approximated NZ values were taken from the 2020 Stats R&D survey data
New Zealand's R&D expenditure was weighted by GDP using OECD data to enable comparisons with other countries.
Data for New Zealand Higher education sector expenditure on research and development (HERD) comes from the StatsNZ Research and Development (RAD) survey; data for other countries are from OECD MSTI. Recalculated or approximated NZ values were taken from the 2020 Stats R&D survey data
New Zealand's R&D expenditure was weighted by GDP using OECD data to enable comparisons with other countries.
Data for number of publications is taken from the Dimensions database. Recalculated or approximated NZ values for total number of publications were divided by the count for total researchers.
The count for total researchers represents researchers who are Full Time Equivalents (FTE).
Data for number of publications is taken from the Dimensions database.
The spend for each country is determined from government and higher-education expenditure on R&D. It is calculated for each country in a given year by subtracting business expenditure on R&D from the gross expenditure on R&D. Recalculated or approximated NZ values for total number of publications were divided by the spend for NZ based on 2020 Stats NZ R&D data.
Data for recalculated or approximated New Zealand values were converted into OECD values for New Zealand in PPP dollars and then converted into percentages.
Data for recalculated or approximated New Zealand values were calculated by dividing total researchers (FTE) and total R&D personnel in all sectors by OECD total employment data.
