The Tertiary Education Commission runs the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) quality evaluation every 4 years. Data on the demographics of researchers working at tertiary education institutes is available as an output of the PBRF evaluation. This includes ethnicity and gender data.
Data was obtained through a custom reuqest from MBIE to the TEC. The data is sourced from Performance-Based Research Fund's (PBRF) Quality Evaluations on 17 January 2019. Data from 2006 and 2012 has also been provided.
Researcher demographic data is based on PBRF-eligible staff whose Evidence Portfolio received a funded Quality Category. These results are weighted on a Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) Basis.
Where a researcher identified more than one ethnicity, only the first ethnicity has been counted. Note that 2006 data does not contain any responses for Middle Eastern/Latin American/African.
An interactive interface to the researcher demographics data can be found here. Since the data originates from a custom data request from TEC, the raw data is held by MBIE and only summary data is released in this dashboard.
